Pre-Season Checklist: Get Ready for the Season Ahead

As the season approaches, now is the ideal time to carry out a thorough pre-season check of your riding equipment. Regular use, changes in your horse’s shape and natural wear can all impact comfort, performance and safety — often without being immediately obvious.

Taking the time to review everything before you’re back in full work can help prevent problems later on and ensure both horse and rider start the season in the best possible position.

1. Book a Saddle Fit Check

A saddle fit check should be the starting point of any pre-season preparation. Horses naturally change shape due to age, fitness level, workload and seasonal condition. Even a saddle that fitted well last year may no longer be suitable.

A qualified saddle fitter can assess balance, contact and overall fit, helping to prevent discomfort, restricted movement or long-term issues. Regular checks are essential for maintaining comfort and performance.

2. Check Girth Straps

Girth straps are subject to a lot of pressure and wear over time. Before the season begins, check for:

  • Cracking or splitting
  • Stretching or uneven length
  • Loose stitching or weakened areas

Any signs of deterioration should be addressed immediately, as worn girth straps can compromise safety.

3. Inspect Your Girth

Take time to inspect your girth carefully. Look for:

  • Stiff or cracked leather
  • Weakened or overstretched elastic
  • Uneven wear

A well-maintained girth supports comfort and stability and reduces the risk of rubbing or pressure points.

4. Examine Stirrup Leathers

Stirrup leathers often show wear gradually, particularly around the buckle holes and where the leather folds. Check for thinning, cracking or stretching, and replace them if there is any doubt. This is a simple but vital safety check that should never be overlooked.

5. Check Bridle and Reins

Finally, go through your bridle and reins thoroughly. Pay close attention to:

  • Stitching at stress points
  • Billets and fastening areas
  • Signs of dryness, cracking or weakness

Even small areas of wear can worsen quickly once regular riding resumes.

Start the Season with Confidence

Pre-season checks don’t need to be time-consuming, but they can make a significant difference. Well-maintained equipment supports your horse’s comfort, enhances performance and gives you peace of mind every time you ride.
